I tend to be pretty out of step with a lot of things with which people are fannish about, so I was pretty psyched to give [community profile] jukebox_fest a whirl, as it's just really really freeing to just be able to pick up any fandom for which I might want to write or read over the course of a few minutes. I had a lot of fun picking up stuff for my recipient and for treats in this exchange, and its the sort of low-key, accessible type of exchange that I think I might aim to do more of in the future.

My Gifts

"Upon the Sands of Time" by [archiveofourown.org profile] roguefaerie (I Have the Moon - The Magnetic Fields (Song) | Narrator/Original Male Character, Teen, 1K): I have loved "I Have the Moon" ever since somebody pointed out to me that it was (allegedly) supposed to be about an unrelenting vampire pilot chasing their human lover, and that is just the right mix of wacky and tragic that warms the cockles of my black heart. I ended up receiving this very evocative, dreamy story that riffed on the line "you have become like other men" and described the whole process of trying to let go of your vampiric lover when they decide to partake of an alchemical elixir that brings them back to humanity. It captures the weary, timeless sense of immortality really well, and has a great vibe that I associate with a lot of the narratives of elders in old school VtM.

"A Moment at Twilight" by [archiveofourown.org profile] roguefaerie (Wolf Like Me - TV on the Radio (Song) | Narrator/Original Non-Binary Character, Teen, 0.4K): This was an intense little bite-sized ficlet that captured the feeling of "Wolf Like Me" in all its danceable, sexy, intensity. It features a werewolf scenting her way through a dance to a soon-to-be-werewolf lover in the middle of a heat-filled summer party. It nailed the frenetic, fast-tempoed vibes of the song and carried with it a sense of destiny and inevitability that was honestly a really cool accompaniment to "Upon the Sands of Time" by the same author.

My Works

"Mare Desiderii" for [archiveofourown.org profile] LamiaCalls (Yulia - Wolf Parade (Music Video) | Narrator/Yulia, Teen, Major Character Death, 1.5K): A sad piece about what it's like to lose the love of your life and then not be able to grieve in ways that are out of step with state-approved narratives. Contains evocative depictions of space and drowning and such.

"Wondrous Deep" for [archiveofourown.org profile] reine_des_corbeaux (Clyde Waters - Anais Mitchell & Jefferson Hamer (Song) | Willie/Margaret, Teen, Major Character Death, 1.2K): I just really really dig Childe Ballads, so I decided I would inevitably pick one to treat. This is a wholly tragic take on the tragic original, but now with more incest.

"I Faint. I Faint. I Faint." for [archiveofourown.org profile] chantefable (Štefan | Stephen - Hrdza (Music Video) | Narrator/Štefan, General, Art): I'm trying to get better at drawing, and I'm trying to vary up my styles. I ended up doing something bright and vibrant in the hopes of capturing the spirit of an upbeat Slavic traditional song.

"The Sightings That Are Made" for [archiveofourown.org profile] sweetcarolanne (The Bigfoot Scenic Byway - Lenny Green (Song) | General, 2K): This was a thoroughly endearing song that accompanied a thoroughly endearing request. It's about bigfoot communities, art communities, and finding points of connection and sympathy.

Other Neat Stuff

"Defying Convention" by [archiveofourown.org profile] weakinteraction (Telephone - Lady Gaga ft Beyoncé (Music Video) | Teen, 3.9K): This piece beautifully captures the weird, flippant, completely self-confident feel of the original music video, and it does wonderful things with original characters and the reconfiguration of Gaga, Queen Bee, and the Pussy Wagon as urban legend.

"Everything You Want" by [archiveofourown.org profile] monsoon_moon (NEW MAGIC WAND - Tyler the Creator (Song) | Original Male Character/Original Male Character, Mature, 2.9K): One of my absolute favorites in the collection. This is a hellaciously intense story of heat, sympathetic magic, names, and jealousy. It is scorchingly hot and visceral in all the best ways, and I cannot praise it enough.

Dear Creator,

Hey. I'm psyched for this exchange because I enjoy the flexibility that song canons afford a creator, and I want to open by saying that I am a staunch proponent of optional details being optional regardless of how many ideas I've thrown about here. I'm excited for whatever you come up with for this particular set of songs, and I really hope you enjoy creating something for them. I've attempted to give a broad set of prompts for songs where I can in the hopes of suggesting a wide range of possibilities, but don't feel hesitant about taking a piece in some direction I didn't anticipate.

I've tend to theme my sign-ups to some degree, and this is a monster mash set of requests with one oddball time-traveling cat song thrown in. I'm a horror fan on both the kitchy B-movie level and on the deeply chilling hardcore creepiness level, so feel free to make things as scary or un-scary as you see fit. Also, if you're inspired to do so, I'm pretty open to crossovers, given that every song is a supernatural/monster narrative of some sort. I just really like monsters a lot and will welcome more than one in a fanwork.

Lastly, thank you very much for creating something on my behalf. I dig this exchange concept a lot, and I really look forward to somebody taking one of these songs somewhere interesting!

Do Not Wants: ageplay (underage characters and age gaps are fine); incest relationships written as completely healthy and normal; omegaverse; pregnancy-related kinks; scat/emeto (watersports are okay; unsexy mentions of vomit are okay; all poop is a no go)

General Likes: bittersweetness; black humor; character death; complex family relationships; hurt/comfort; illness and injury (plague and head bashing in particular); fever dreams; existential despair; non-kinky explorations of pregnancy, childbirth, and parenthood; stoicism in the face of terrible things; surreal imagery; torture; religious, mythological, and/or plant-based symbolism; whump

Opt-Ins: all archive warnings; crossovers between requested fandoms; epistolary fiction; gender/sexuality headcanons that are not the sole focus of the fic; interactive fiction; poetry; whatever person/tense is Your Jam

Smut Likes: awkward, bad, or inept sex that's still enthusiastic; blasphemy/sacrilege kink; clothed or partially clothed sex; hate sex; non-con/dubcon in general; undead sex

Art Likes: I like things with dynamic poses; things that are cute/cartoonish; things that do something offbeat and a little bit exaggerated/surreal; and things that are a little over-stylized and dripping with symbolic imagery. Limited palettes and starkly inked black and white pieces are close to my heart as I am a rotten colorist and have an affinity for styles I could conceivably emulate. I also tend to like things that are de-saturated or a washed out looking. As with my general likes, I'm a sucker for anything that has cool symbolism with plants and religion in it.

Additional Note: If there's anything unclear or concerning about a DNW, a prompt, or any other part of the letter, please don't hesitate to contact the mods.
