What a year, huh?

I'm trying my best to assess what I can do in the present moment as a relatively powerless individual in the face of the present political moment, and I'm doing my utmost to remind myself that work on the local level isn't wasted and is significant even if it will not turn the tide of world events on its own. I'm very tired though--although this is wholly my own fault as I am experimentally attempting to give up caffeine--and I'd like a week where I do not have any major historical moments to digest.

On top of this, I'm potentially getting laid off at the end of the month and will be on an unpaid furlough starting next week to see if there's room in the budget for me to transfer projects after my team's budget was slashed by a staggering degree. I spent the past two days attempting to be an engaged and supportive community member to cope, and this unfortunately consisted of going to the most escalatory activist de-escalation training imaginable (Loud progressive white man challenge: Allow speaker to speak without demanding she answer as to whether or not she has personally de-escalated the confrontation you are imagining in your head right now; Difficulty: Impossible) and walking a few miles to a nearby bookshop for a cozy poetry reading only to find that it was cancelled due to the impending blizzard I then had to walk a few miles back home in.

I'm gritting my teeth through it all and continuing to do my best to get a healthy dose of grass touching (it's there, somewhere, beneath the snow), and I tell myself that surely this all mean that 2026 is going to be my year--the writing couldn't be so sloppy as to have this dismal an opener without a turnaround. Still, not the best two weeks I've had by a long stretch.

Those sound like legitimate bummers! I hope your next two weeks are better, at least in the local sense.
