Round Up: Unconventional Fanworks

unconventionalfanworkex is basically the holy grail of exchanges for me. I love experimental modes of storytelling; I love people trying things they haven't tries; I love just having new ways to make stuff. While I didn't make as much of that stuff as I did last time this ran, I still had an absolute blast creating and experiencing people's creations.

My Gifts

"Grimoire Gastronomique" by pirotess (Vagrant Story | General, 2.3K): It's a goshdarn Vagrant Story cookbook! Delicious, classy themed recipes (and cocktails!) for one of Square-Enix's classiest games. I have eaten and drunk my way through half of these already, and I'm committed to trying the rest.

Podfic for "Pelargonium" by peasina (Lady Audley's Secret | Robert Audley/George Talboys, Teen, Podfic): I got podfic of my own fic, and it was an absolute delight! Peasina reads my work so beautifully, and there's a beautiful piece of cover art to go with it!

"The Ram's Skull" by Gammarad (Final Fantasy Tactics | Original Characters, Teen, 1.2K + Podfic): This is a delightfully creepy and unnerving archival record from a future Ivalice where archaeologists are uncovering the remains of Belias and having--perhaps--not the greatest time doing so. It's full of delightful bits of subtle worldbuilding about what a high fantasy society might look like when it's finally dragged into a modern age that looks like our own.

"Regard for Consequences" by primeideal (Remembrance of Earth's Past | Thomas Wade, Teen, 1.9K): This is for a canon with which I had absolutely no familiar when I first checked out the gift, and it's still utterly hilarious. This is an extended series of Reddit AITA queries that go beyond the existence of reddit and the earth itself. I'd highly recommend it to people familiar with canon.

"Spam of the Damned" by moemachina (Final Fantasy Tactics | Ruvelia Atkascha, Teen, Interactive Fiction): I cannot find adequate words to explain how intensely perfect this gift is for me as a person. It's a modern Ivalice, academic horror, interactive fiction game about an extremely minor character, and it's gorgeous. It's also hilarious in how well it lampoons academic life, spam emails, and historical TV dramas. It's accessible to people who are not familiar with the canon at all, and it is honestly better at doing a lot of the things the canon itself does.

"we never had a chance here" by elijah_was_a_prophet (Night in the Woods | Mae Borowski, General, Fanmix): This was a work for another canon with which I was unfamiliar, but it was a complete delight to listen to nevertheless. It's full of indie/folksy vibes and very clearly communicates a sense of aimlessness and early-to-mid twenties disillusionment.

"Mad Science/Sad Sciencei" for Shadaras (Various Nineteenth-Century Novels | Teen, 2.8K): I made this Honey Heist inspired game that draws upon all my favorite nineteenth-century non-realist novels and their relationship to the sciences.

Black Sails Plushies by Cruria (Black Sails | General, Plushie Patterns): It's so neat that somebody actually ran with this freeform, and the detail they poured in these are impressive.

"Dreaming of Sunshine: A Primer" by wafflelate (Dreaming of Sunshine | General, 3K): A fun, accessible primer on a fandom about a fanfiction.

Janeway/Chakotay Fanmix by kingstoken (Star Trek: Voyager | Chakotay/Kathryn Janeway, General, Fanmix): A really well put together fanmix that does a lot of clever stuff with individual song lyrics.

"Lazy-Fancy Summer Recipes (by the Song-Covey Sisters)" by Ashling (To All the Boys I've Loved Before | Katherine "Kitty" Song-Covey & Lara Jean Song-Covey & Margot Song-Covey, General, 2.3K): An absolutely hilarious narrative/set of recipes; really how all recipes ought be written.

"new futures now" by elijah_was_a_prophet (Sailor Moon | Neo-Queen Serenity, General, Fanmix): Completely gorgeous, jazzy, dreamy tunes that evoke a hopeful utopic future.

A Belated Chocolate Box Roundup

So yeah... the recurring story of my fannish life these days seems to be getting improbably good/obscure/unlikely things in exchanges, and my Chocolate Box experience of two weeks prior was no exception. I ended up with a lot of poignant and/or hilarious undead sex this year, which is--no joke--precisely the most correct and on brand thing for me to wake up and discover on Valentine's Day morning.

"Root and Bone" by karanguni (Propertius 4.7 | Poetic Speaker in Propertius 4.7/Cynthia, Teen, 0.3K): A gorgeously evocative, compact little piece about the poet from Propertius' elegies as an old man, ready to die atop his former lover's grave.

"The Voyage Ends" by Nedrika (Propertius 4.7 | Poetic Speaker in Propertius 4.7/Cynthia, Mature, 1K): It's completely mind blowing that I got two different and completely beautiful Propertius works, but this one also features a graphic account of skeleton sex on the banks of the Styx!

"A Novel Method of Physical Manifestation in a Pair of Subjects" by Nedrika (Original Work | Original Characters, Teen, 2.4K): A completely hilarious account of some Victorian widow on ghost on ghost on widow action written as an article for the Journal of the Society for Psychical Research. This is side-splittingly funny and surprisingly sweet at moments, it was also apparently based on my own piece of rigorous Kantian scholarship, and I now have a completely bizarre original characters' ship.

"The Crucifixion" by Nedrika (Kick Heart | Sister Juliet/Romeo Maki, General, Art): Beautiful, visually striking art of my favorite wresting nun and associate!

As I realize the soothing pleasure I get from making lists of things, it has come to mind that I didn't post anything about in_a_peartree, all the immensely cool stuff I got, all the immensely cool stuff I made, and the sundry other immensely cool stuff I found browsing other people's trees (despite having this large parts of this post drafted since like... the 5th).

Yuletide Roundup

So yeah... my Yuletide was absolutely insane in how good it was. I loved what I made. I adored what I got. I really just feel like I won the exchange all around, and I've been left entirely psyched about my decision to get back into fandom last year.

My Gifts

"The Release of Selinuntius" by Nedrika (Hashire Melos! | Melos/Selinuntius and Melos/Selinuntius/Raisa, Explicit, 19K | Graphic Violence, Non-Con, Underage): a brilliant post-canon piece featuring tons of smut; mind-bogglingly perfect, edutaining research into the ancient world; all sorts of whumptastic descriptions of injury and angst, and a general fix-it for the less than satisfying elements of the film's end.

"He Bearing Ill Tidings" by FireEye (Final Fantasy Tactics | General, 5K): A lovely, angsty short about Alma greeting Zalbag after the events at Ft. Zeakden and confronting him over Teta's death.

"ostentatio vulnerum" by moemachina (Final Fantasy Tactics, Wiegraf/Zalbag, Mature, 9K): a pre-canon piece set during the Fifty Years War and featuring my favorite, completely bizarre rarepair (in addition to pretty much every other character in the game I deeply love); features absolutely breathtaking characterization and worldbuilding, insanely hot/awkward sexual encounters under a blasphemous icon, and the best portrayal of Boco I have ever encountered.

I wrote four stories and drew one Madness Treat. They are all Final Fantasy of some flavor, because that’s just how I roll these days.

"Poisons" for Phlyarologist (Final Fantasy VI | Teen, 2.8K | Character Death): A sort of experimental double drabble sequence examining the planned game event in which Sabin had the possibility of dying at Tzen.

"Mantra" for Phlyarologist (Final Fantasy VI | General, 2.1K): A short post-canon piece about life at Mobliz, the death of magic, and Gau’s reactions to potatoes.

Bloom for Lirillith (Final Fantasy VI | Sabin/Cyan, General, Art): I’ve joined what seems to be the increasingly exchange-active crowd of people who ship Sabin and Cyan and filled somebody’s Wrapping Paper request to draw these guys.

"Like There’s No Tomorrow" for Rethira (Final Fantasy Tactics | Delita/Ramza, Teen, 1.4K | Character Death): A post-canon Delita/Ramza piece set around the time of Olan’s execution.

"Fetters" for noahfronsenburg (Final Fantasy Tactics | Mature, 10K | Graphic Violence, Character Death): Very dark darkfic (character death and graphic violence archive warnings) focusing on Wiegraf in an AU in which he wins the boss fight at Riovannes.
